When Russell Blaylock grew up, there was no measles vaccine.
As he remembers it, measles was a benign disease and most children recovered from it.
Wait, what does it mean that most children recovered from it?
Is he admitting that not all children recovered and some died?
Again, is Measles Deadly?
Because they sure did!
Let’s take a look at just how many kids died from this benign disease when Russell Blaylock was growing up…
In the pre-vaccine era, in the 1940s and 1950s, there were typically at least 400,00 to 700,000 cases of measles in the United States each year, with larger epidemics every two or three years.
So yeah, hundreds of thousands of kids got measles and they did recover.
But there were also about 400 to 700 deaths each year!
So tragically, many didn’t recover.
And having measles wasn’t like going for a walk in the park.
“I’ve often called measles ‘the harmless killer’ because, although most youngsters recover uneventfully, the disease a certain amount of really serious damage.”
Dr. Joseph Molner
Those who survived could have complications, including pneumonia, seizures, encephalitis, and SSPE.
And they were all miserable!
And like many other vaccine preventable diseases, it was hardly a benign disease.
